Going Viral

Apr 28 / Christie Lower
I want to talk about something today that’s been on my mind — because I’ve lived it, and I know many of you might dream about it or even be chasing it without realizing it.

Going viral.

It’s happened to me a few times now.
And let me tell you — when it first happens, it feels amazing.
The rush, the excitement, the way your post or artwork suddenly blows up — there’s this energy around it that’s just undeniable.

But a few hours in? It becomes overwhelming.
Notifications flood in. Comments, messages, tags — too many to even keep up with. And once the dust settles, here’s the real truth I’ve found:

It doesn’t really pay off the way you’d think.

Why?

Because most of the new followers you gain from a viral post aren’t authentic followers. They’re there for the moment — not for the journey.
And it almost never translates to meaningful growth in sales, commissions, or community.

Think about it:
How many times have you hit the "like" or "share" button on something cool?
(We love when people do that for our work, by the way.)

But how often do you go deeper — check out their website, buy from their shop, read their blog, or really follow along?
Rarely ever, right?
And when I think about the posts or reels that actually made me want to dig deeper... they weren't the viral ones.
They were the ones that felt real. Personal. Honest.

That’s where the real magic happens.
It’s easy to think that building an audience is a numbers game — but it’s not.

As a creative, what you truly want isn’t just big numbers.
You want true connection.
You want followers who care about your work.
You want buyers and collectors who value what you create.

Because let’s be honest — how many times have you made something, put your heart into it, and then felt a little nervous when it sold, wondering, "Will they even appreciate this?"
That’s the part of being a maker that isn’t talked about enough.
Connection matters.
Feeling seen and valued for what you create — that matters.

Going viral is wonderful in the moment — and don’t get me wrong, I still celebrate when it happens!
But does it move the needle?
(No, not the felting needle — although I'd love that too. 😉)

I’m talking about the needle that really tracks your business growth. Your true progress. Your meaningful connections.
Focus on what moves that needle.
Focus on the people who show up for you even when you’re not trending.
Because in the end, that’s what builds a creative business (and life) you actually want to wake up to every day.

Christie
